Gig Harbor, Washington, USA

From Vancouver Island we took a ferry ride across to the United States to meet up with Jean Ann (Exchange Teacher, 2003).  Arriving around mid day we headed up to the mountains to the Olympic National Park for a picnic.  The views of the surrounding mountains and the walks along the ridges and through the alpine meadows were most enjoyable.

From here we headed back to the coast to Dungeness Spit, a sand bar some 9km into the sea, where we did a brief walk along the beach and amongst the driftwood.

Gig Harbor has a history going back some 150 year.  As a sheltered harbour it was used extensively for fishing, timber mills and a port for food that was produced in abundance around the area. The tide levels changed about 3.6 metres while we were there, so it was interesting to see this difference. The views down the harbour with Mount Rainier on the background were quite impressive. (Mt Rainier is some 85km away but is still such a significant feature.)

Kaye went to a bridal shower for Jean Ann’s daughter Teigan while I explored the harbour. Later we looked around more of the district before having our supper on the back deck.  During the weekend we were fortunate to have nice sunny weather, so we ate all meals outside.

After our brief stay, we headed back to Vancouver Island for the remainder of our time in Canada.
